Mangaluru, Dec 4, 2014 : The District unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha members courted arrest as part of a Jail Bharo agitation on December 4, Thursday to protest against the rising cases of crime against women. The protest was held near the AB Shetty Circle.
Mallika Prasad, former Puttur MLA who spoke on the occasion, charged the government of failure to check the alarming rise in sexual crimes and violence against women. Referring to the Pushpalatha murder case of Uppinangady and the Nanditha case of Tirthahalli, she said the government had failed to secure justice in both the cases.
Sulochana G.K. Bhat, District President of Mahila Morcha who also addressed the protestors, said the fast track courts for rape cases, as promised by the government, have not yet started functioning. She accused the state government of complete failure to ensure safety of women and demanded steps to rehabilitate rape victims and offer counselling for them.
District BJP Chief Pratap Simha Nayak also spoke on the occasion and said the Home Minister KJ George must quit owning moral responsibility for failure to check crime against women.
Mahila Morcha workers from Puttur, Kodagu and other districts also participated in the protest.
