Rev Mar Divannasios appointed bishop of new Noojibalthila diocese

Mangalore, April 10: A new diocese will be established at Noojibalthila in Puttur with Rt Rev Dr. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios as its first bishop on April 15, Thursday.

 

 

Addressing press people at a press conference held at Abhiman Residency near Bunts Hostel on April 10, Saturday, Convener of the Diocese Fr George Kalayil said that the Universal Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ comprises 22 individual churches and is the greatest church in the world. He also informed that the Universal Catholic Church has 21 Eastern churches and 1 Western church.

He also said that all the 22 churches are under the control of the Pope, the successor of St Peter, the first apostle of Jesus Christ. The Malankara Catholic Church is one of the 21 Eastern churches, which hails from St Thomas, an apostle of Jesus Christ who came to India during the first century, he added.

Puttur is the first Malankara Catholic Diocese in Karnataka, comprising the civil districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Hassan, Chikkamangalore, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore, Shimoga and Chamarajanagar, he said.

The new diocese has been established with the purpose of satisfying the spiritual needs of people who have migrated to Karnataka from Kerala after the independence.

The new diocese was promulgated with the consent of the Pope Benedict XVI, by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, the Father and the Head of the Malankara Catholic Church on January 20. Bishop of Bathery Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Divannisios has been appointed as the first bishop of Puttur.
