Mangalore, July 30: Three fishermen of Thota Bengre, who had gone fishing and were reported as missing from the past 5 days, were rescued by a fishing vessel from Kerala around 30kms from the Calicut coast.  The trio returned to Mangalore on Parashuram Express on Friday, safe and sound.

The rescued fishermen, Manohar Putran (40), Francis D’Souza (22), and Vincent D’Souza, had gone fishing on July 23 Saturday, after which they developed engine problems and drifted across the rough seas for five days before they were rescued. The trio was found 30 nautical miles off the Kozhikode coast in Kerala on the evening of Thursday.

Mohan Bengre, a neighbor of the missing fishermen, told reporters that they had contacted their family members and informed them that they were in Pudiyapu fishing harbour, which is located 5kms to the north of Kozhikode.

The three said that they had anchored their fishing boat after its engine failed. The rough sea had broken the rope and set them adrift. The trio had contacted their families through cell phone shortly before they went adrift.

The fishermen were expected to reach Mangalore by Friday noon.
