Renowned Yakshagana artiste Shambu Hegde’s birth anniversary observed

Mangalore, Nov 9, 2011: The Kannada and Cultural Department and the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy of Bangalore jointly observed Keremane Shambhu Hegde Jayanthi at Town Hall on Nov 9 Wednesday. 


Harshendra Kumar of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala inaugurated the event and said in his inaugural address that he had witnessed Shambhu Hegde’s Yakshagana performance thrice and was a great admirer of Shri Hegde. He also admiringly recollected Shri Hegde’s ability to get strongly involved in the character and make it appear real.

Senior Yakshagana artistes such as Pundarikaksha Upadhyaya and Kokkada Eshwar Bhat were felicitated with shawls, fruit bowls, citations, and mementos. 


Shri Keshavananda Bharathi Swamiji of Edaneeru Mutt delivered the benedictory address on this occasion. 


Kumble Sundar Rao, the former president of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, said in his address that the art won’t be promoted if the president remains inactive and stressed the importance of cooperation on the part of academy members and Yakshagana artistes. 


M. L. Samaga, the president of the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, also spoke on the occasion.


Kannada Sahitya Parishad President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura presided over the event. 


The chief guests were John D’Souza, the DGM of Corporation Bank; Harikrishna Punaroor, the former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad; Ambathanaya Mudhrady, the president of Udupi Kannada Sahitya Parishad; Nebboor Narayan Bhagawath; G. N. Bhat, the AGM of BSNL; and Ratnakar Jain, the proprietor of Jain Travels. 


A Yakshagana prasanga titled Gadha Yudda by Shri Devakana Krishna Bhat was presented on the occasion.
