Mangaluru, Dec 26, 2018: Exposing the miracles claimed by many so-called godmen, rationalist Prof. Narendra Nayak on Friday called upon students to develop a scientific temperament. He was presenting a demonstration at the Government PU College at Vijayanagar in Hassan.

Exposing the miracles claimed by many so-called godmen, rationalist Prof. Narendra Nayak on Friday called upon students to develop a scientific temperament.

Mr. Nayak, who took voluntary retirement as a professor at a medical college in 2006, has been travelling across the country and abroad, spreading awareness on science and exposing miracles. He recalled an incident in which a six-year-old girl was murdered and skinned as part of a bizarre practice called ‘Banamati’ at Aland in Kalaburagi district in 2004. This, he said, prompted him to quit his job and devote his life to spreading scientific awareness.

“As long as we don’t raise questions, there will be hundreds of godmen ready to fool us. They make money out of people’s ignorance,” he said, naming some such godmen known for claiming miracles. The students were thrilled as Prof. Nayak managed to take out a currency note of ₹50 from his ‘empty’ hand. He also spoke about how some seers, running companies to sell products, fool people by making false claims about the products.

The programme was organised by the district unit of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti, in memory of rationalist and writer Ja. Ho. Narayanaswamy, who passed away recently. Prof. Nayak is scheduled to present demonstrations in schools and colleges in Hassan on Saturday as well.
