Mangalore, Sep 6, 2011: Shloka, a II B.Com. student of Ramakrishna PU College, tried to commit suicide in the toilet by consuming phenol today.

Reportedly, Shloka and 8 other students had boycotted classes to watch the Talents’ Day held for the benefit of new students on Aug 30.  Principal Naveen Shetty had issued a notice to all the students and had asked them to call their parents. Shloka, therefore, went to the toilet and consumed phenol.

When the college authorities came to know of this, they admitted her to Vijaya Hospital at Bunts Hostel. When students protested, she was shifted to KMC Hospital.

Later, around 1000 students gathered at the college premises, pelted stones on the building, and damaged window panes and furniture. Furious students alleged that the principal harasses students by imposing fines on them for missing classes and withholds hall tickets during exams.

Mr. Shetty told reporters that the institution is duty bound to ensure that students follow the college rules. Rubbishing allegation of harassment, he said that no student has been harassed by the college authorities.

SI Vinayak and ACP Ravindra Gadadi have taken statements, but a case has not yet been registered. Shloka is now out of danger.
