Mangalore, April 9: Many died or sustained injuries because of the heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightening that struck DK and Udupi districts. 

 



Tree Uprooted 

A huge tree uprooted and fell atop a moving four-wheeler at Jannadai near Bidkal Katte in Kundapur, killing two people. Nine people, who were travelling in the same vehicle, sustained injuries. The family of Mohammed Khaza was travelling in that vehicle from Navunda to Kadur when the unfortunate incident took place. 

The deceased are Nawaz (23), who died on the spot, and Khaza (30), who died on the way to the hospital. Shariyan (25) sustained severe injuries and is now being treated at Manipal Hospital. 

Lightening Struck 


Two children lost their lives when lightening struck them. 

The deceased are two-year-old Sinchana, daugher of Chandra Poojary, who lives in Devalkunda, and Abhilash (14) of Kakkunje near Hebri. 

Sinchana was playing near her house when the lightening struck her. She died on the way to the hospital. Saroja, a housewife who lives in the vicinity, was also affected. Abhilash was talking to his parents inside his house when the lightening struck him. 

Houses Damaged 

Lightening also destroyed 3 houses and 3 quintals of rice, which had been stored in the house of Anand Poojary, a resident of Shivapura in Hebri. Anand Nayak’s cattle shed was razed to the ground and the cattle died. 

Lack of Power

The areas of Hebri, Shivapura, Perdur, Muniyal, and others did not have power becuase of the rains. Heavy rainfall was witnessed at Kundapura, Karkal, Padubidre, Kaup, Hebri, and Alevoor. Although dark clouds were observed in Mangalore, it did not rain. 

2 Killed 

Two laborers died when lightening struck a quarry and caused a blast. The deceased are Ansar (30) and Kumar (32) of Kadandale in Moodubidri. They were about to blast a rock in the quarry, but because of the lightening, the rock blast before the two could run to safety. Five other labourers were also injured in this accident.
