Mangalore, March 3: RTO officials confiscated spare tyres that were kept inside some private buses on Tuesday. They also seized bundles of bus tickets, which were not printed in the accepted manner. J Purushotham, the RTO officer, led the operation in response to complaints voiced during the RTO adalat held by Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) V Ponnuraj on Feb 25. He told the reporters of Hindu that the RTO has booked 25 cases and seized 10 tyres.

G Hanumantha Kamath, the president of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, said that passengers are not able to sit comfortably on the last seat because of spare tyres kept there. He also complained that tickets issued in private buses are not printed in the proper format and have several essential details such as names of operators missing. This made it difficult for passengers to use the tickets as proof while lodging complains for poor service, he said.

Mr. Ponnuraj had informed the adalat that a register must be kept at the RTO to enable people to complain against erring bus drivers and conductors. He had said that, if people continuously complain against a particular driver or conductor, the RTA has to take action against him and cancel his driving licence. The state government has also directed the RTA maintain separate registers for every bus and record such instances.

The RTA also plans to introduce two separate cell phone numbers to enable people to lodge complaints against bus drivers and conductors via text messages. The complaints must be sent to both numbers. Commuters can take photographs of drivers or conductors who use cell phones while on duty and report them to the RTA.

Initially, the bus owners will have to take action against the accused at their level. If this does not work, the government authority will intervene. The authorities will monitor each complaint, he said.

The DC also said that the proposal to install Global Positioning System (GPS) in private buses will be finalized in 2 months.
