Mangalore, Sep 5: The Queen’s Baton Relay arrived into DK through Gundya in Nellyadi on September 5, Sunday. Additional DC Prabhakar Sharma warmly welcomed the relay in pouring rain with doll dance and vaadya on behalf of the DK district administration at 1 p.m. NCC cadets, scouts, guides, and sportspersons from various colleges in the district were present.

Krishna J. Palemar, the district-in-charge minister; SP Dr. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao and his wife Dr. Dipti Subrahmanyeshwar Rao; Santosh Bhandary, the president of the DK Zilla Panchayat; Shivashankar, the CEO of Zilla Panchayat; Shankar Bhat, the former mayor; Amith Singh, the ASP of Putter; Navin Shetty; Laxmishan, the area sales manager of Karnataka Hero Honda held the relay before handing it over to Ganapathy Nayak, the silver medal winner of the Shri Lankan Sports Meet, which was held in Colombo in 1970. Ganapathy Nayak and others carried the relay for a 100-meter run before handing it over to Wing Commander V. N. Singh.

Declaring that DK district was proud to receive the relay, Palemar said that the relay will head for Udupi on Monday and will then proceed to Karwar. He expressed his desire that the Queen’s Baton relay will spread unity among nations, eliminate hatred, and establish peace.

The relay was handed over to Shobha Narayan Manjali Bhargavi, Vandana Rao, and Vandana Shanbhag at Kadri, after which the relay headed over to Town Hall via Bejai Church Road, Lalbhag, PVS Circle, and Ambedkar Circle. Wing Commander V. N. Singh presented the memento to Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalkatti, CEO of Zilla Panchayath Shivashankar; and Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh.

A series of cultural programmes, including a dance performance by Sanathan Natyalaya, Taleemu by Rudranjaneya team of Kaup, Kangeelu dance, Dudi Kunitha, and Hulivesha performance by Bajilakeri Kamalaksha, were presented.

Wing Commander V. N. Singh, was held the 6km relay within Mangalore, which is the 72nd day of the relay, said that the relay will proceed to Karwar, Goa, Kolapur, Pune, and Mumbai.

The Queen’s Baton, which is 66.4cms in height and 1.9kgs in weight, has Queen Elizabeth’s message engraved on its miniature 18-carat gold leaf. The Queen’s Baton Relay torch was carried into India through the Wagah Border on June 25 by 2008 Olympics Gold Medal winners Abhinav Bindra. The relay is scheduled to reach Delhi on September 30.
