Puttur, June 12, 2015: Villagers of Palthady in Puttur received the shock of their life time when a man who they believed was dead, saw the man alive, that too hale and hearty. Sammu (50) of this village is the man whose last rites were performed even when he was alive.
The story goes as follows. A few days ago a newspaper had carried an advertisement with photos of some unclaimed bodies at the Wenlock Mortuary in order to trace the families of the deceased. The photograph of the body of one Shakeel in the advertisement, resembled that of Sammu of Palthady.
The family of the latter who thought that the body was that of Sammu claimed it and even performed the funeral. Sources said one eye of Sammu was always shut and even the eyes of the person whose body was thought to be that of Sammu bore the same semblance.
It is gathered that Sammu was leading a vagabond life and never visited home regularly. He who had left home once had never returned even after six months and the family’s efforts to search him went in vain. It was at this time that the ad carrying photographs of unclaimed bodies was found in the newspaper.
It was only recently that he was traced at Javagal in Hassan district and brought home. The family of Sammu has now informed the Wenlock Hospital authorities about the mistaken identity. Still there are many who believe that the family had done a good dead by performing the last rites of an unclaimed body.
