Public Instruction Department and the district committee of the Bharat Seva Dal celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi by honoring Udupi Gundibail Ramarao Bakkillaya, the freedom fighter, at Town Hall on Oct 2. They also garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
V. Ponnuraj, the deputy commissioner; MLA Yogish Bhat; Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, the district president of Bharat Seva Dal; and the members of the Bharat Seva Dal garlanded the statue, after which they organized a programme in Town Hall, where Bakkillaya was honored.
In the meantime, the District Congress Committee staged a protest against the inefficiency of the state government. Ramanath Rai, the president of DCC, said that the government was neglecting farmers and poor people. He said: “Although Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa talks about farmers, he has failed to solve their problems. They have not even issued the ration cards properly.” Rai also said that the government has failed to utilize Union government funds for the benefit of the people.
Leaders of the Congress Ivan D’Souza, Mamatha Gatti, and Kodijal Ibrahim were also present at the protest.
