Property Tax hiked by 15 percent : City Mayor

Mangalore, Mar 31, 2011: Mayor Praveen said that property tax rates will be revised as per the self-assessment scheme (SAS) once in three years; accordingly property tax rates will be hiked by 15 percent with effect from April 1, Friday. He was addressing reporters in his chamber on March 31, Thursday. He added that the new rates of 15 – 30 percent will be in effect as per Section 109 (A).

MCC Commissioner Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash said that the MCC has decided to enforce the taxes from tomorrow for the overall development of the city.

Regarding solid waste management, he said that all tenants as well as property owners will have to pay solid waste management cess every month, adding that as there was sufficient technical support, accepting the municipal act was essential. He also said that owners of houses of 1000sq. ft. and below will have to pay Rs. 10, of 1000sq.ft. - 3000sq.ft. have to pay Rs. 30, and over 3000sq.ft will have to pay Rs. 50.

Those who own commercial buildings that have an area of less that 1000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 50, of 1000sq.ft. to 5000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 100, and over 1000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 200. Those who own industrial structures that have an area of less than 1000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 100, of 1000sq.ft. to 5000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 200, and over 5000sq.ft. must pay Rs. 300, he said.

The solid waste management cess for marriage halls, hospitals, and nursing homes with an area of up to 10,000 sq. ft. is Rs. 300, between 10,000sq. ft. to 50,000 sq.ft. is Rs. 500, and over 50,000sq.ft. is Rs. 600.

He also said that the MCC expects to rake in a profit of Rs. 12 crore, its current profit being Rs. 3.5 crore.

Stating that the collection of solid waste management cess has been satisfactory, with 94 percent of the cess being collected till March 15, he said that those who pay property taxes from April 1 to April 30 will get a rebate, those who pay from May to June will not be charged any fine, and those who pay after July will be charged 2 percent fine every month, he said.
