Mangaluru, May 27, 2020:  Dakshina Kannada PU College Principals’ Association has appealed to the authorities to postpone the evaluation of II PUC answer scripts till a conducive atmosphere prevails to take up the work.

Speaking to reporters, Association president Umesh Karkera said, “It is our duty to evaluate the answer scripts. But amid the fear of Covid-19 and lockdown, evaluators are not able to reach the centre to take up the work.”

‘From interior areas’

“The department of pre-university education has asked deputy chief examiners and assistant examiners to reach the centres on May 27 and May 29 (respectively) to take up the evaluation work. Mangaluru has five evaluation centres for evaluating the answer scripts of seven subjects from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Most of the evaluators are not able to reach the centre due to the non-availability of buses from interior areas,” he said.

Karkera said the department has exempted senior teachers from evaluation work in the wake of Covid-19. Citing an example, he said 50,000 answer scripts of Economics subject has reached the centres. “With only a handful of teachers, how can evaluation process be accelerated,” he asked.

Lodging facility

Karkera said there are no hotels in the district and the evaluators from faraway places cannot get lodging facility as well. There are chances of spreading the diseases when answer scripts and bundles of answer scripts are exchanged among the teachers.

Further, the department has urged the evaluation centres to arrange the sanitisers and other precautionary measures to check the spread of Covid-19. The centres are not yet paid the remuneration for last year’s work. Also, the direction that remuneration for ‘D’ Group employees have to be paid by the colleges where the evaluation centre is set up will be a burden, he added.

Designated local centres

The Association has asked the department to try the method employed by ICSE/ISC boards wherein the evaluation of answer scripts is done at designated local centres and answer scripts distribution centres will be in every taluk.
