The election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mangalore was held in two phases. Both Praveen and Geetha Nayak won by 34 votes and were elected as the fourteenth Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively while their opponents Appi and Mamatha Shenoy got 21 votes and lost the elections.

This year, the post of mayor of Mangalore was reserved for a candidate of the backward classes and that of the deputy Mayor was reserved for a woman candidate. Accordingly, Praveen has been selected for the post of mayor this year.

Rajani Dugganna and Rajendra Kumar, who were the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of last year, respectively have completed their terms. Praveen and Geetha Nayak will take over as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively on Feb 28, 2011. Their terms will conclude on Feb 27, 2012.

Thirty-five of the 60 corporators belong to the BJP, while 20 are Congress members, 1 is a JD(S) member, 1 is a CPI(M) member, 1 is an independent corporator, and 2 belong to no party. However, only 55 corporators cast their votes since Jyothi Jayaprakash, an independent corporator, and Harish of the BJP were absent.

Mayor Praveen said that he will function under the guidance of the MLA and other authorities. Stating that the MCC has won the second place for cleanliness, he said that he will work to maintain that position and raise the Mangalore’s level to number one.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak said that she will maintain the reputation of her post and urged the support of the citizens to make Mangalore clean, green, and beautiful.

Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the MCC Commissioner; M. Manjunath Nayak, the additional regional commissioner; Rajani Dugganna, the former mayor of Mangalore; and Rajendra Kumar, the former Deputy Mayor, were also present.
