Pramila Joyce Pinto to be felicitated in Udupi

Mangalore, July 7 , 2011 :Pramila Joyce Pinto, one of the special kids in Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pambur in Udupi, won a gold medal and a bronze medal in the roller skating event of the Thirteenth Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens, Greece from June 25 to July 4.

Remedia D’Souza, one of the trustees of the centre, informed reporters on Wednesday that Ms. Pinto had won the gold medal in roller skating 30-m straight line race and the bronze medal in the roller skating 30-m slalom race.

The 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games at Athens is among the largest athletic events for people with developmental disabilities. Around 7,000 athletes and 3000 coaches and officials from over 180 countries were present at this event.

Ms. Pinto’s success will be celebrated by holding a rally from Bantakallu Cross Road to Pambur on Thursday. The students of Pambur Church School, Narayanaguru School, and the inmates of Manasa Rehabilitation Centre will participate in this procession. Ms. Pinto will be welcomed at Katpady and felicitated at the Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pambur.

Ms. Pinto was trained by Lakshminarayana Upadhya of Ambagilu before she left to participate in the Special Olympics at Athens. Previously, she had participated in National Coaching and Championship Camp held in Hyderabad on September 14 – 19 in 2009, two sports camps in Puducherry on June 12 – 16 in 2010, and another camp in Hyderabad on October 24 – 30 in 2010.

Ms. Pinto excels in the cultural area too. She has participated in a number of cultural competitions such as dance, drawing, singing, and fancy dress across the district and has won prizes.

Thelma Lewis, the principal of the centre; Hemalatha, who teaches at the centre; Anil D’Souza, the social worker; and Louis D’Almeida, the president of Catholic Sabha in Udupi, were also present.
