Mangalore, Jan 23: Active participation of women in politics will go a long way in the progress of the nation, said Motamma, opposition leader in Legislative Council and former minister.

She even recalled that it was during the chief ministership of SM Krishna that the Stree Shakti Group was launched with the objective of making women self-reliant.

Continuing Motamma said “I did not aspire to be a politician but it came in search of me.” Speaking on her political career, she said she did not go behind politicians for an opportunity, but opportunity came her way. Regretting that jealousy ruled the roost in politics, she said the field was filled with power hungry people who always have a fear that giving a chance to someone else may land themselves in trouble of losing their position. She said the nation needed strong women who could take up social causes and emphasized the need to create awareness among women.

Sr Prem D’Souza, Principal of St Agnes College, presided over the function, Chandramohan Marathe, Head of the Department of Political Science of the College, was on the dais.  Dr Krishna Kottari, Dr Rosveera D’Souza and Dr Shalip were the resource persons.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Political Science Department of St Agnes College and Lions and Lioness Clubs of Mangalore.
