Mangalore, Feb 28: The people of Tannirbhavi organized a protest in front of the DC’s office under the leadership of the CPI (M), demanding the immediate provision of door numbers on Feb 28, Monday.

In his protest speech, Lingappa Nanthoor, the secretary of the Dalita Hakkugala Horata Samithi, said that the residents of Tannirbhavi had earlier organized the “Ma Na Pa Chalo” movement demanding rights over their ancestral land, in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on Nov 29, 2010, but that the authorities concerned had chosen to ignore them.

He also stated that 300 families residing within the limits of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) had expressed their anger against the government’s move of purchasing their ancestral property for industrial development and handing it over to private industrialists.

In his inaugural address, Sunil Kumar Bajal of CPI (M) said that the government provides door numbers to houses of their kith and kin first and pointed out that 98 percent of the families in Tannirbhavi are poor and belong to Dalit communities. Alleging that the government and the district administration are doing nothing for the welfare of poor and backward people, he said that the CPI (M) will fight against this injustice.

Krishnappa Konchady, the member of the district committee, was also present.
