People must take advantage ’Social Security Scheme’: Dr Vishal

Udupi: August 14, 2015: R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, said on Thursday that all people should take advantage of the social security insurance schemes. He was speaking after inaugurating an awareness programme on social security schemes and registration camp at the Government PU College, here.

Dr. Vishal said that ill-health was one of the major reasons for poverty in the country. Hence, it was essential that every person got himself covered under a social security scheme. The health insurance scheme launched by the Union government was available at low premium. Every family should take advantage of the scheme, he said.

In his introductory remarks, Guruprasad, officer of Vijaya Bank, said that nearly 7.5 crore banks accounts had been opened in the country under the Jan Dhan Yojana, while about 10.17 crore people had been registered under various social security schemes.

In Udupi district, 6.8 lakh persons were eligible for the Prime Minister’s Suraksha Insurance Scheme. But so far only 1.57 lakh persons (23 per cent) had got registered under the Scheme.

As many as 6.5 lakh were eligible for Prime Minister’s Jeevan Jyoti Insurance Scheme in the district. But only 74,000 persons (13 per cent) had registered for it. As many as 4 lakh persons were eligible under the Atal Pension Scheme, but only 1,582 persons had registered for it in the district, he said.

M. Sharat Kumar, Senior Divisional Manager of Oriental Insurance Company, gave details about the Prime Minister’s Suraksha Insurance Scheme. S.A. Hegde, Divisional Manager of LIC of India, gave information about Prime Minister’s Jeevan Jyoti Insurance Scheme.

Shivakumar from Corporation Bank, spoke about Atal Pension Scheme. R.V. Shanbhag of Canara Bank gave details of Prime Minister’s Mudra Yojana.

K. Subba Rao, Lead District Chief Manager, welcomed the gathering. L. Pinto, Chief Manager of Canara Bank, proposed a vote of thanks.
