Udupi, November 2, 2011:Addressing reporters Tuesday, Pejawar Mutt Seer Shri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji said that those who support projects that cause harm to the environment are anti-social elements. He urged the state government not to approve the second unit of UPCL till the expert committee formed to study the impacts of the UPCL on the environment submits its report.

Stating that the state government is no cooperating in any way with the expert committee, the Swamiji said that the government is not even meeting their travelling expenses. One of the members of the committee is abroad and is expected to return on Nov 19, owing to which the committee is expected to start functioning soon and might submit its report to the government at the earliest possible.

He also said that, if the expert committee’s report proves beyond doubt that the UPCL is harmful to the environment, the state government should shut down UPCL. If, on the other hand, the committee feels that UPCL can function provided it adheres to certain environmental guidelines, the state government should not allow it to function until it satisfies all the environmental requirements.

Making his stand clear, the Swamiji said that he is not against the establishment of power production in DK, but that he strongly feels that coal-based power plants in this eco-sensitive region is dangerous to life.

In response to Veerappa Moily’s recent comment, the Swamiji said that religious leaders have the right to interfere in social activities if they feel that harm is being done to the people.
