Parking confusion on Car Street

Parking confusion on Car Street

Mangaloretoday News Network

Mangalore, March 12: The people of Mangalore are miffed by the fact that traffic cops impose fines for parking in places, which do not have the “No Parking” sign.

For instance, a road in Car Street indicates with its yellow lines that authorized parking is permitted on alternate days, but lacks a “No Parking” sign. Hapless passengers who park their vehicles there find themselves issued with a penalty ticket.

When citizens say that the absence of “No Parking” signs confuses them, traffic cops say that citizens “ought to know where to park and where not to park.” Moreover, the penalty slip clearly states that if the “offenders” fail to pay the fine of Rs. 100 within 24 hours, legal action will be taken against them.

A meeting has already been convened with the traders to discuss the confusing “parking on alternate days only” mechanism. Since no board bearing instructions has been displayed explaining this new mechanism, outsiders have no way to knowing it.

Interestingly, police say that the penalty slip slapped on “parking offenders” is just a “warning slip” and that the bearer of these slips “need not necessarily pay” the fine.

When the matter was brought to the attention of DCP (traffic and crime) Mutthuraya, he said that he will investigate the matter.

Explaining the “parking on alternate sides” system on Car Street, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that vehicle owners are requested to park on alternate sides of the road to facilitate traffic control and the painting work undertaken by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC). Since Car Street has not yet been issued any notification, action cannot be taken, he said and added that traffic cops were asked only to warn and inform vehicle owners, not slap fines on them. The commissioner said that citizens with issues can approach the commissionerate.
