Mangalore, April 1: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar laid the foundation stone for the new fire service office at Pandeshwar on April 1, Friday.

D. V. Guruprasad, the Director General of Police (Fire and Emergency Services), said in his introductory address that fire stations will be established in all the taluks of Karnataka. Speaking about the duties and responsibilities of the fire service department, he said that the department not only puts off fires, but also rescues birds and animals in distress. He also said that the government must increase the number of fire service stations, especially in big cities and added that another station will be set up in the special economic zone.

Urging builders to construct buildings that are immune from fire accidents, he said that buildings should have a base large enough to facilitate the entry of fire vehicles. The government must also provide wide roads enabling the fire service vehicles to reach the spot of fire quickly, he said.

Speaking on the civil defense unit, he said that the city will establish a unit enabling the police department, the NSS, the fire department, the media, students, and the local home guard to work hand in hand. The unit will have 800 members, he added. He also urged the builders and contractors to complete the building of the new fire service in time.

Later, D. V. Guruprasad told reporters that Mangalore will soon get a turn-table ladder vehicle of 30 meters, similar to the ones available in Hubli and Bangalore. Worth Rs. 3.5 crore, the parts are imported from Norway or Sweden and later fabricated in the country. Money is not a problem, but people should be properly trained to use the available facilities, he added.

In his inaugural address, Palemar said that the fire department works hard to protect lives and is reputed for maintaining its standards without getting involved in any corruption. Stating that the government has provided all the required facilities to run the fire station, he said that the fire service personnel should call themselves life protectors because that is what they are.

H. S. Varadarajan, the chief fire officer, delivered the welcome address. He said that there are two fire stations in Mangalore, one in Moodubidri, one in Belthangady, one in Bantwal, one in Puttur, and one in Sullia. Service stations will be set up in every city in each district and taluk, he added.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, ZP President Shailaja Bhat, IGP (western range) Alok Mohan, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, SP Labu Ram, Mayor Praveen, Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak, Chandrakanath Kamath, and Corporator Ranganath Kini were the dignitaries on the dais.
