mangalore, July 26: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated a series of competitions organized for school and college students of DK by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in a bid to enhance awareness on solid waste management on July 25.

In his inaugural speech, the minister urged students to take the required steps to keep the city clean. MCC Commissioner Vijayaprakash welcomed the gathering and said that this event has been organized with the purpose of conveying to the students the importance of keeping Mangalore clean. Sayyed Asif Ali painted a landscape on canvass.


The district administration is also planning to ban the manufacture and sale of plastics in the city.  He said the district administration aims to take Mangalore city to the top position from eighth place in cleanliness. “Various programmes have been chalked out  to make the city clean and beautiful. The State government had given a sum of of Rs 5,000 to all the schools to create an awareness on solid waste management,” he informed.


MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijay Prakash in his introductory speech said that several initiatives have been taken up by the City Corporation to make Mangalore clean and beautiful.


The drive to plant 20,000 saplings in the city corporation limits, setting up of bio gas plant at Urva Market, compost units in two wards, development of green building concepts have been carried out. The MCC is also involving school, college and NSS students in its drive.


The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) has come forward to grant US $ one million to the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) under its Water and Sanitation Programme.


The civic body would be utilising the grant mainly for setting up community-based bio-gas plants and decentralised mini-waste-water treatment plants in select wards, conducting public awareness programmes on solid waste management and encouraging Self-Help Groups to take up door-to-door collection of solid waste.


He also stressed in the need for involving schools and colleges in making the city clean.  Coastal Development Authority Chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, Mayor Rajani Dugganna, Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar, Health Standing Committee President Shantha and others were present.


A mime show on waste management and environment cleanliness was staged by Mime Ramadas and group. Nagaraj Shetty inaugurated the environment related art demonstration by popular artist Sayyad Asif ali. Various competitions were held for the students.


Mayor Rajani Dugganna and Chairman of Coastal Development Authority Nagaraj Shetty were also present.
