A number of MPs and MLAs participated in the meeting. N. Yogesh Bhat, the deputy speaker; MP Nalin Kumar Kateel; MLA Abhayachandra Jain; MLA Captain Ganesh Karnik; DC Chennappa Gowda; Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh; and Coastal Development Authority Chairman Nagaraj Shetty were also present.

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar said that the companies had promised jobs for the PDF youth and that this decision was taken when V. Ponnuraj was the DC of Dakshina Kannada. The PDF youth were also trained for these jobs. However, the youth were later told that the matter will be discussed in a couple of weeks, after which they were told that their case will be considered in two more weeks. The harassed students, who had just completed the company’s training and were waiting for employment, decided to stage an intense protest demanding their rights, he said.

The minister then requested journalists to leave the meeting, stating that the press will be addressed in two more hours. The job-trained PDF youth, however, requested the minister that the journalists ought to the present; but the minister permitted just a few youth leaders to stay for the meeting, which lasted for 2 hours.

At 2:45 p.m., the minister addressed the journalists in front of some of the PDF youth and said that the problem has been solved after prolonged discussion with company representatives.

He said that MRPL, OMPL, and other companies have agreed to employ all the 183 youth in the first training batch within 3 months. Around 66 students were already recruited and 93 more will be given jobs in 3 months, and OMPL will be employing 144 of the total 299 students in one year, he said.

The minister said that the companies will employ all the 536 PDF youth in 3 years and will provide Rs. 10,000 per month till they can be recruited. The government has approved the plan, according to which an order letter will be sent to all the PDF youth in 15 days.
