PA College has not witnessed any ragging case - Prof. Surfraz Hasim

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Sep 21: Prof Surfraz Hasim, the student welfare officer (SWO) of PA College, said that the preliminary investigation regarding the widely publicized case of ragging at PA Polytechnic College in July 2009 has clearly shown that the video clipping was that of a skit rehearsal, which took place in the hostel room and not in the college premises. He was addressing reporters at a press conference held at Press Club on September 21.

Further explaining the matter, he said that the students in the video clipping belonged to the same batch, which was admitted to PA Polytechnic College in July 2009, and have been studying together for the past 15 months. The students were not being ragged as shown in the video; instead, they were practicing a skit, which was recorded by another student in his mobile phone. Two of the students in the skit acted as juniors and the other two acted as seniors.

These students are currently in the III Semester at PA Polytechnic College and are not students of PA Engineering College. Plays staged in the college premises have to be first approved by the SWO, he said and also added that no case of ragging has been reported in PA College, which was established in 2000.

Abdulla, one of the students shown in the video, was not attending classes because he had not cleared his first year. The students had already given statements that the skit rehearsal was recorded during their study holidays in Oct 2009. The student who recorded the video sent it to some of his friends, who might have forwarded it to others, which gave rise to this misunderstanding.

Since the ragging news was published in newspapers and aired in news channels, the police department was eager to clear the issue. The police had registered an FIR based on information provided by the director and investigated the video clipping and the news published on TV and in newspapers.

Advocate Udayakumar, Director (administration) K. M. Haneef, Registrar Iqbal, and Principal of PA Polytechnic College Ramalingan Gowda were also present during the press conference.
