The police had arrested Vidya Dinaker, Godfrey D’Souza, Ashok Amin, Jacintha D’Souza, and Latha D’Souza and booked them under Sections 147, 148, 353, and 341 on May 21, Thursday.

The samithi is engaged is an intense protest against the dumping of mud in River Phalguni by MSEZ workers constructing a road and pipeline corridor by the banks of the river. According to the members, dumping of mud in the river increases the risk of artificial flooding during monsoons.

Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, general secretary of National Confederation of Human Right Organizations, said that the DC has attempted to silence protestors from the region by having them arrested. Booking a case under Section 353 on a renowned social activist such as Vidya Dinaker is both sad and condemnable, he added.

Renny D’Souza, member of People Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), said in his protest address that arresting children along with the adult protestors and activists was a child rights violation. The DC, being the president of the Integrated Child Protection System in DK, owes an explanation to the public, he said. He also demanded the immediate suspension of the police officers who arrested the children.

Muneer Katipalla, district president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), condemned the police for arresting people aged between 1 year and 85 years. Accusing the DC of insulting democratic values by refusing to talk to protestors who had visited them, he said that the DC has made things worse by having them arrested under Section 353.

Some of the organizations that took part in this protest were Kuloor – Melukoppa Athrebal Naagarika Samithi, Citizens’ Forum, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Communal Harmony Forum, PUCL, and Student Federation of India (SFI).
