Mangalore, May 19: Omega Hospital and Charitable Trust and Heart Foundation, which was started with the objective of providing the best care for cardiac patients, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Addressing reporters at a press conference held at Hotel Ocean Pearl, Chairman Dr. K. Mukund, said that a grand public function will be organized on May 22, Sunday at the Omega Hospital Campus in Kankanady. District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar will inaugurate a free cardiac camp at 2:00 p.m., he added.

Speaking about the various treatments offered at the hospital, he said that, in the section of invasive procedures, Coronary Angiography such as Coronary Angiogram, Coronary Angioplasty, Balloon Valvuloplasty, Balloon Angioplasty Radio Ablation Procedure, Pacemaker Implantation, Device Closure for birth defect such as ASD, VSD, or PDA have been conducted in over 55,000 cases for the past 10 years.

The hospital has also conducted cardiac surgeries such as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery including Valve Replacement Surgery, Awake Bypass Surgery, Closed Heart Surgery, Beating Heart Surgery, Keyhole Bypass Surgery, and all kinds of open heart surgeries in case of over 5000 patients under the guidance of Dr. A.G. Jayakrishnan MS, FRCSI, FRCS (CTh).

The hospital has conducted more than 3000 medical check camps in different places, including the most remote areas of Kerala and Karnataka, he said. 

During 2006 the latest non invasive procedure such as MDCT Angiogram was started in Omega Hospital’s sister concern, the Mangalore Heart Scan Foundation at Bendoor. The advantage of this facility is that no admission is required as normally insisted in the hospital. A stem cell therapy centre was also started in 2006, and several cases have been successfully treated and the patients have obtained the desired results.

Omega Hospital was selected by Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, to provide medical graduates a 2-year post graduate diploma in clinical cardiology. The programme aims at training young doctors to learn and practice non invasive procedures such as ECG, TMT and Echocardiography which enables them to examine and diagnose early stages of cardiac problems of the patients, some of them living in remotest regions of our country. So far 16 doctors have been awarded the diploma and they are practicing successfully. Three doctors who recently passed their qualification test will be confirmed their diploma during the convocation to be held on May 22nd 2011 at the hospital premises, he informed.

Dr. A. G. Jayakrishnan MS, FRCSI, FRCS (CTh), the cardio thoracic surgeon said that, during 2008, free medical treatment was offered to senior citizens.
 
A Cardiac Rehabilitation centre with the latest physiotherapy facilities was started in 2010. All cardiac patients, who have undergone cardiac procedures or cardiac surgeries, go through this centre with right learning before being discharged from the hospital.

In order to overcome the shortage of trained cardiac nurses, Omega Hospital started a one-year diploma in cardiac nursing course for GNM or B. Sc nursing passed nurses in 2010. Twenty students are undergoing a full-time planned programme in the hospital, he added.

Administrator Mr. S. L. Bharadwaj said that a souvenir containing the various achievements of the hospital, opinions of patients, articles on medical care, diet, physical exercise, and so on will be released on the occasion.

Dr. Prasanna and Dr. Khasim were also present during the press conference.
