Karkala, April 8, 2016:  Indian pace bowler Javagal Srinath said education and sports should go hand in hand to develop sportive sprit among students to face the challenges of real life.  Speaking at the inauguration of the state-of-the-art B C Alva Sports Complex, set up by Nitte Education Trust at Nitte Campus, he said sports should be looked at as a profession.

"Talent alone is not final, talent and brilliant thinking come into play. Wonders can be created only when talent, mind set, acceptance and infrastructure meet well at a point. International standards are now adopted even down to colleges at local level," he remarked referring to the newly-built sports complex.  He noted it is one of the best of its kind in the world.

"Life teaches many things.  When one plays sport with integrity, honesty and sports becomes part of life, life would be durable, enjoyable and productive," he said.   He added there is no age bar to play games. Person of any age can take part in sports and it helps to understand even more.

Cricketer Srinath said academics is must, but sports should compliment academics. "Victory and loss add new dimensions to everyone’s life. Education gives articulation and power of self-confidence and enough words to understand failures and accept defeat better. Sport is a superior means in life," he noted.

He urged the youth and students to spend at least one hour in sports activities. Comprehension increases and sports enhance one’s personality. Sports need not be representative and is a way to contribute to the society, he said and urged the Nitte Group to extend facilities to other colleges as most of the colleges in rural areas are deprived of such full-fledged sports complex. Infrastructure is about how it can be used in a better way, he felt.

Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister K Abhayachandra Jain said sport is the last priority while the government formulates the budget allocations.

He called upon private institutions to take up the sports promotional activities as the government is unable to perform all jobs.  He added that government is contemplating on directing the educational institutions to provide grace mark for the students who take part in the sports related contributions. .
