Mangalore, Jul 12: Roman and Catherine School for the Blind, a fully equipped school for the visually impaired children of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and the neighboring districts was inaugurated at Kapikad on July 12, Monday. The school is the brainchild of Dr. U. V. Shenoy of the Seva Bharathi Trust and he had been contemplating its establishment for the past two decades. Carmine Lobo played a very important role in the establishment of this school.

The Seva Bharathi Trust, with Dr. U. V. Shenoy as its head, was already serving mentally challenged children in collaboration with the Chetana Child Development Centre on V. T. Road.

The school will provide formal education according to the syllabus prescribed by the Karnataka Education Board. In addition, computer education will also be provided to the fully impaired students with the help of the popular talking software called JAWS. Computer education will be imparted to the partially impaired with the help of screen magnification software.

The school will adopt informal teaching methodologies such as mobility and orientation, handicrafts, independent living, cricket, chess, and so on. The school will also take care of the students’ medical requirements with the consent of their parents or guardians.

The objective of the Roman and Catherine School for the Blind is to provide education from the first to the seventh education in Braille. Subjects such as English, Hindi, Kannada, Mathematics, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Moral Education will be taught. Students who complete their 7th Std will be admitted to the High School.

The aims and objectives of the school are to instill a spirit of independence in the visually challenged children, introduce them into a society based on knowledge, and provide opportunities for them in the hope that they contribute to nation building.

The authorities of the school requested the public to spread its message and advertise its services to the parents of visually impaired children.
