Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, May 5, 2016: Addressing media on May 4, Wednesday, DC Dr. R. Vishal, informed that a  new building for the District Central Library would be constructed near the Town Hall here at a cost of Rs. 5.18 crore.

udupidcHe added that the new building would have three floors (excluding the basement) and would be constructed on 20 cents of land at Ajjarkad. The construction of the new building would be completed in 15 to 18 months.

While the basement is meant for parking, a reading room and an administrative office would be provided on the first floor.  The second floor too would have a reading room and other facilities for readers.   However, on the second floor, there would be a computer lab and a centre for training for competitive examinations.   It would also have a lift facility.

All efforts would be made to fully digitise the library. This would help the readers to get information of the available books from the computer, he said. The need for a new building had arisen because the present premise of the District Library next to the Udupi City Municipal Council office was too congested.

The construction of the new library building would be done by the Nirmiti Kendra. Of the Rs. 5.16 crore, an amount of Rs. 3.18 crore had been arranged from MP and MLA Local Area Development Funds and funds through corporate social responsibility.

The foundation stone laying ceremony of the new library building would be held here on May 7. saturday. Kimmane Ratnakar, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education and Libraries, and Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development Minister, would be the chief guests at the function.

Already the district administration had started two library branches — one at Manipal and another at Nittur. An amount of Rs. 50 lakh would be spent on the library in Kundapur town and Rs. 15 lakh on the library in Saligrama town, DC  Dr. Vishal said.  D. Manjunathaiah, City Municipal Council Commissioner, was present.
