New association to fight for plane crash victims’ families’ rights

Mangalore, Jul 14:  The Mangalore Air Crash Victims’ Families Association has been launched to receive information regarding compensation and facilities given by the government as well as various agencies for the families of the plane crash victims. The president of this association is Mohammed Beary.

It may be recalled here that Air India Express aircraft from Dubai that overshot the runway and crashed while landing at the Mangalore air port on May 22, 2010. Totally 158 passengers including pilot and cabin crews died in the air crash. Soon after the incident, Authorities of Air India express as well as government had announced the compensation to the families of air crash victim. The Air India had disbursed interim compensation to some of the families of air crash victims. Air India had disbursed the compensation after scrutinizing the correct documents. But, some families are still waiting for the compensation which is remained with Air India Authority. Meanwhile district administration has asked the families to apply for Chief Minister’s relief fund.

Speaking at a press conference held at Press Club on July 14, Wednesday, Mr. Beary said that the association has been registered on July 8 according to the Societies Act and comprises 2 residential legal counselors and 13 members.


The association aims to help the families of the victims get their compensations according to the law. The state government of Karnataka has not compensated the families of the plane crash victims of Kerala because they received compensation from the Kerala government. He urged the state government to compensate the families of plane crash victims in Kerala because the plane crash took place in Karnataka.


He also said that Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel will visit Mangalore and conduct a condolence meeting for the victims and organize a thanksgiving party for the authorities who had been of help at the TMA Pai Convention Hall on July 27, Tuesday.


Secretary Dr. Jayasimha Shetty said that the authorities have handed over baggage belonging to 46 families, but valuables such as gold have not been handed over. He urged Air India to exhibit the valuables retrieved from the crash site so that families can identify their belongings.


The authorities must provide compensation to the victims’ families according to their income, according to the Montreal Act, because 80 percent of the victims were poor labourers, who do not have an income certificate. If the foreign agencies do not assist the families with compensation, the association will fight for their rights, said Dr. Shetty.


Vice President Varadaraj Karyangal, Narayan, and Organizer Abdul Rahiman were also present.
