New Udupi ZP chief Savitha, deputy Prakash - Elected

Manipal Aug 8, 2014:   TheUdupi ZP  has 25 members, of which the BJP’s strength is 16 and Congress nine; Savitha Shivanand Kotian and Prakash T Mendon from BJP were unanimously elected as the president and vice-president respectively for the third term of Zilla Panchayath.  The tenure of newly elected president and vice president is 18 months.

The election was conducted under the supervision of election officer, Mysore Division Regional Commissioner MV Jayanti. Both Savitha Shivanand Kotian and Prakash T Mendon had filed two sets of nominations. The name of Savitha was proposed by members Jyothi S Shetty and Upendra Nayak and Prakash T Mendon was proposed by Ganapathy Sriyan and Sunitha PRajaram. The election process was just 30 min.

Savitha Shivanand Kotian said her priority was for solving the drinking water problems, road repairs and putting an end to farmers woes. All attempts would be made to convey the benefits of government development programmes to the beneficiaries on time. The problems which can be solved at ZP level, will be sorted out at the earliest. If there is a need for approaching government, a delegation will be sent to the government, she said. The 38year-old politician who represents Bailur constituency in Karkala is into the new position in her second term as ZP member. She was representing Belmannu constituency during her first tenure as ZP member from 2005 to 2010.

Savitha hails from a farming community in Kinnimulki and has studied PUC. She is associated with BJP since her early times in politics. She was district BJP vice president during 2006-2009.   Prakash T Mendon promised that he would work for the development of the district regardless of politics. “Transparency and commitment is my slogan,” he said. Mendon represents Basrur constituency and is a BJP member since the past 20 years. The 40-year-old Mendon a first time ZP member. He sets his priorities on solving drinking water problems, street lights and health.
