Mangaluru, Feb 25, 2019: In a surprisingly snap move, the new commissioner of police Sandeep Patil conducted a lightening raid on the district jail in the city this morning and nabbed six cell phones, three knives from under trials lodged there.
Police search teams personally lead by Sandeep Patil swooped down on the District Jail at about 8:00 a.m. and recovered the contraband items from the inmates. DCPs Uma Prashanth (crime and traffic), Hanumantharaya (law and order) and other senior officers accompanied the commissioner. The district jail, which is situated in the heart of the city, adjacent to Canara College, is notorious for being a hub of illicit activities. Fist fights and even murders have taken place among the inmates and inside the jail premises in recent times, despite the vigilance of the authorities.
Sandeep Patil, who took charge from T. R Suresh just two days back caught the system unawares and has sent a message that he means business. The raid is said to be a result of some other undesirable developments which happened outside the city. These undisclosed developments alerted the police regarding the inmates’ links with the outside world.
Case has been booked at Barke Police Station in the city and action will be initiated to ensure that such incidences will not be repeated henceforth, a police media release has stated.
