Mangalore, August 2: Kuwait-Bahrain Air India Express flight is the first flight to land at the new integrated terminal Building of Mangalore air port located at Kenjar, Bajpe which started its full fledged function on Monday, August at 6.00 am.

M R Vasudeva, who took charge as the director of Mangalore air port recently, has greeted the passengers of Kuwait-Bahrain Air India Express flight which has landed on the new terminal at 7.20am.

 

With the new terminal building becoming operational, the passengers from Mangalore and neighbouring state no need to commute long hour to reach air port. Now the Manglaore Airport is closer to the city by about 7 km. Now it is just 15 km away from the city as against 22 Km to the old terminal building at Bajpe, before.


Air India Station Manager Chellam Prasad, Air Port officials and the staffs of Air India Express were present on the occasion.

 

All the equipments used by the air port staffs have been shifted from old air port terminal to the new terminal building. The shifting was completed few days back said Vasudeva. Both operations of both domestic and international flights will be handled from the terminal henceforth.

 

Vasudeva further said that the new terminal building has seven escalators and an equal number of elevators. Out of four security hold areas, two were on the ground floor and the rest on the first floor. Aerobridges could be connected to the first floor. The boarding passengers could wait in security hold area after clearing  the immigration formalities.

The terminal building is spread over 18,200 sq m. while the six parking stands (apron) for flights and the taxi-way to the runway is spread over 43,000 sq m.

The cost of the entire project was put at Rs. 158 crore. He said the parking lot could accommodate 300 cars.

Mr. Vasudeva said the AAI would require about Rs. 75 lakh a month to maintain it. The electricity bill could go up to Rs. 50 lakh.

Passenger traffic was on the rise at the airport. It went up from 2.77 lakh passengers in 2004-05 to eight lakh passengers in 2009-10.
