Mangaloretoday News Network

Mangalore, Mar 25: Condemning child trafficking and sexual abuse at an interactive session held at Sahodaya on March 25, Friday, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) Nina Nayak said that the commission intends to train doctors in all hospitals to protect children and urged every individual and association related to child welfare to create awareness regarding this issue. She also stated that the government is not sanctioning funds to anganwadis to take proper care of the children.

Renni D’Souza, the child rights activist, said that rates of child trafficking and illegal adoption are highest in DK. He also informed that the child trafficking prevention committee set up by the department of women and child development has not convened a single meeting during the past 3 years.

Stating that child welfare organizations are working hard for children’s welfare, he regretted that there is no proper coordination among these organizations. Urging the media not to harass children by giving too much of publicity to their plight, he said that they must refer the case to police officials. Stating that the quality of education imparted at ashramas is not monitored by the government, he said that only the quality of food is being checked in these schools.

Hilda Rayappan, the head of the Prajna Counseling Centre, said that the government failed to release funds under the Juvenile Justice Act on time and that the government expected her to keep 50 children in one house. Although the fiscal year has drawn to an end, the government has still not released funds, she said and added that she somehow managed to find two houses although the rent has soared sky high. Urging for a quick correction of the current system, she said that the child welfare committee is the only decision maker in such situations.

Dr. Madhu of the KSCPCR spoke of a heart-rending case in Bantwal, where a couple of children were brutally murdered and nobody had lodged a complaint. He also spoke of the case of bonded laborers who were released from Vitla without proper arrangements being made for their rehabilitation.

CWC President Asha Nayak said that the government must empower children’s club since there is no medical checkup and no distribution of school books or medicines on the part of the government.
