Chief guest S. P. Chengappa, the president of the Mangalore Bar Association, said that Mr. D’Costa’s book has made it easy for other lawyers to explain legal issues to their Konkani-speaking clients. Since ignorance of law cannot be used as an excuse, the Konkani-speaking population must use this book to get the required legal information, he said.

Chief guest Dr. Edward Nazareth, orthosurgeon and Konkani writer, said that writing a book is not an easy task since it requires knowledge and command over language to convey ideas clearly to readers. Giving a brief introduction to the book, he said that it comprises information on how to file cases against harassment, cheating, cyber offences, food adulteration, and others.

Presiding over the occasion, Narayan Kharvi said that Konkani cannot be saved only by speaking and reading, but also by writing Konkani books, which will be of great benefit to readers. Declaring that those who cannot respect the law cannot respect people, he said that respecting law and order has been made compulsory. He also urged Konkani speakers to use all languages, but respect their mother tongue.

Author D’Costa said that, although the Konkani-speaking community is the largest in DK after the Tulu-speaking community, Konkani-speaking advocates do not make the required efforts to create awareness about the law among the people of the community, owing to which he decided to write several legal books in Konkani so that people can understand the subject better. The second edition of “Kanoon Mahet” deals with information regarding ten laws, which will be of great help in daily life, he added.

Social worker Rita Noronha was one of the dignitaries on the dais.
