Nalin Kumar demands state govt to provide details on Yettinahole project

Mangaluru: August 27, 2015: Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday warned the State government that he would be forced to join the agitation against the Yettinahole river diversion project if it does not address the concerns of people’s representatives and residents of the district.

Mr. Nalin told presspersons here that the masses are kept in the dark by the government which has reportedly been executing the project in hush-hush manner without obtaining mandatory clearances from authorities concerned. “Even I, as the Lok Sabha member of the region, am not informed about the details of the project,” he regretted.

Though in principle he was not opposed to the project, the MP wanted the government to hold a dialogue with the residents and convince them that they would not be deprived of water. Already, Mangaluru is facing drinking water shortage while hinterlands in the district are short of water for agriculture purposes. One is not sure what impact the proposed project would have on the availability of water, he said.

When pointed out that it was his party, BJP, which gave administrative approval for the project when D.V. Sadananda Gowda was the Chief Minister, Mr. Nalin said the proposal was there from the time of S.M. Krishna itself. The process should move; but people should be kept informed and their concerns should be addressed in a democratic manner, he said.
