NMPT worst hit by ban on iron ore exports: Report

Mangalore, OCtober 20: The state government’s ban on the export of iron ore has had an adverse effect on the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT). NMPT, Belekeri, and Tadiri ports export around half of the state’s 30 million tons of iron ore. Tadiri and Belekeri are minor ports, which remain closed during the monsoons.




According to a recent port sector report created by Motilal Oswal, the broking house, Kandla and NMPT were lagging behind while other ports reported a 25 percent year-on-year growth in cargo in September. Of the two, NMPT is the worst performer. The report also states that iron ore shipments from India were 4.5 million tons in September 2010 compared to 5.2 million tons in September 2009.


An NMPT official states that NMPT has exported iron ore worth 37.53 tons, but this year, it could export only 8.38 tons, adding that the ban has hit NMPT revenues and cargo volume.


Declining to reveal revenue generated from iron ore exports, the official said that the number of freighters bearing coal and limestone arriving at NMPT has reduced considerably. These freighters bring limestone and coal and take back iron ore. Only 2.98 tons of limestone was brought into the port this year compared to the 7.43 tons last year.


Chairman of the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has informed reporters that the ban on iron ore exports in Karnataka will not have any effect on MPT. He said that MPT had handled 42 million tons of iron ore, of which only 3 million tons  came from Bellary – Hospet. This year, the figure will rise to abut 5 million tons and the total quantity of iron ore exports from MPT will be 46 million tons.


The drop in cargo volume does not worry analysts such as K. Ravichandran, senior VP and co-head of corporate sector ratings at ICRA. He said that drop in cargo volume has been taken into consideration; however, a prolonged ban on iron ore exports will pose environmental hazards because it is left in the open.
