Mangalore, May 5: In his convocation speech, delivered on the occasion of the 7th annual convocation of NIT-K Suratkal on May 5, Wednesday, Governor H. R. Bharadwaj spoke about the importance of redefining, restructuring, and reorganizing the engineering and technical systems and organizations of the country to ensure the sustainable utilization of its natural resources.

Accepting the fact that engineers are meant for the application of scientific knowledge for the provision of good infrastructure, he called upon all engineers to focus also on the efficient use of resources, environmental conservation, sustainable development, safety, health, and welfare of the common man while providing infrastructure. Reminding the young engineers that the nation has invested in them, he urged them to deliver by becoming good entrepreneurs, contributing to society, and creating job opportunities and wealth. He added that the brand name “engineered in India” will gain global recognition only because of the committed and sincere efforts of capable engineers. 

The governor then conferred prizes and gold medals on the top achievers. Degrees were conferred on 375 of the 825 candidates. The others were not present for the programme.

Prof Govardhan Mehta, the chairman of the Board of Directors NITK, presided over the programme. Prof Sandeep Sancheti, the director of NITK, made the welcome speech and read out the annual report. He said that NITK received the ISTE-KIIT Best Technical University Award 2009 in recognition of its contributions to technical education. Prof Mehta and Prof Sancheti distributed certificates to PhDs and graduates. 

Home Minister of Karnataka V. S. Acharya, the parents of the students, and many others were present.
