Muslim girls are welcome to study in our college’ : St. Aloysius College

Mangalore, Apr 27, 2012: Management of St Aloysius College, which laid down law banning burqa in classrooms and examination halls, stated that “Muslim girls are welcome to study in our college.”


Reacting to the news appeared in TOI on April 27, the college management said that girls can wear burqa in the college campus. “It has appeared in the media that St Aloysius College, Mangalore has banned wearing of burqa in the college. We the management, principal and the staff wish to state that all Muslim girls are welcome to study in St Aloysius College. As per the present understanding, girls can wear burqa on the college campus and our students will vouch for it. Only inside the classroom and the examination hall the girls have been asked not to wear the burqa in the best academic interest and for maintaining sanctity of the examinlations,” stated Mangalore Jesuit Education Society vice president Fr Joseph Rodrigues, college principal in-charge Fr Walter Andrade and registrar AM Narahari in a release.

“We appeal to all concerned not to blow this issue out of context. Large number of Muslim girls are studying in St Aloysius College and our objective is to offer the best education. Students of all communities, caste and religions have passed out of the portals of this 132 year old college,” they stated.


Meanwhile, St Aloysius Pre University College management clarified that they did not lay down condition banning burqa in their prospectus as appeared in the news. College administration sources said that they insist students in their institute to adhere strictly to the dress code by wearing uniform in the best interest of maintaining the sanctity of the college. “Our prospectus does not contain any regulations that restrict girls from wearing burqa,” sources added.
