Addressing reporters at a press meet held in Mangalore on May 28, Monday, Natesh Ullal, a social worker, said that a Karnataka High Court bench, led by Judge Vikramjith Sen, ordered that a status quo must be maintained on the MSEZ project until the court orders otherwise. He also said that a copy of the court order has not yet reached them, but the court ruling has been brought to the notice of all concerned parties.

In April, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Karnataka High Court, through which it was brought to the attention of the court that the ecology of River Phalguni was damaged because of the dumping of mud into it.

The high court ruling is application to the stretch of land beside KIUCL and KISCO.

Natesh challenged supporters of SEZ to give details of how many jobs the SEZ has generated for the local youth. He said that the panchayats must decide if industries ought to be set up in their limits, not metropolitan cities, because people in cities cannot know about the ecology of rural areas. Stating that petrochemical industries, which destroy nature, are not required in rural areas, he urged people to protest against industries that are polluting Mangalore.

Speaking on the occasion, Vidya Dinker, social activist and head of the Citizen’s Forum for Mangalore Development, said that MSEZ workers continued dumping mud into the river even on the night of May 24. When the local people called police control room, their call was not received, she added.
