Mangaluru: August 23, 2015: Former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde urged the government to introduce moral science in the syllabus for school children.

Addressing a gathering, mainly students who had converged in large numbers for the talent awards programme organised by Brahmana Mahasabha at the centenary hall of Sarada Vilas Educational Institutions, Hegde said the society lacks moral, ethical values and imparting of Moral Science as a subject for students is a necessity.

Making his point by recalling a few incidents, he was witness to during his tenure as Lokayukta, Hegde said, “A woman in Koppal had to deliver her baby in a bus stop due to the greedy staff of a government hospital, while the relatives of a teenager who died in a mishap in Bengaluru in 2011, had to wait for autopsy for three days, due to an inhuman doctor”.

Hegde wondered why the people turn reluctant to call themselves as the ‘servants of the people’, while they are overzealous to join the government service. He came out with a set of advises — both for students and their parents — to lay a foundation for a just society and appealed to the students to nurture ambitions and achieve them in a legitimate manner, without turning their ambitions into obsession. The parents should not coerce their wards to tread the wrong path.

Saying that he has been addressing youngsters rather than elders with the only aim of inculcating a few values in young minds, Hegde felt that even it is one per cent change, it is a good start.

As many as 170 students from different parts of the State, including Mysuru, Mandya, Shivamogga, Belagavi and Chitradurga districts, were felicitated with talent awards and scholarships.
