September 5, 2010, being Sunday and holiday, the Teachers’ Day was celebrated in St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Moodubelle on Saturday, 4th September 2010 at 11.30 am. Prior to the programme in the College auditorium, the students conducted few fun games for the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff in the school-college quadrangle in which all the teachers including Principal, Paul Sequeira whole heartedly participated and obliged the students.

The Teachers Day programme in the auditorium was presided over by Mrs. Shilpa Nayak-President of the Parents-Teachers Association. B. Sadannada Rao, retired teacher from the Church Aided Higher Primary School, Moodubelle and Dr. Eugene D’Souza, retired lecturer from Mumbai and presently the Media Coordinator of Bellevision Media Network in Moodubelle were the chief guests. Principal -Fr. Paul Sequeira, Mr. Henry Fernandes-Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mr. Devdas Hebbar-President of the Old Students Association, all the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff and the students leaders-Kum. Deeksha and Kum. Vinaya Nayak were present on the stage.
 

Mrs. Wilma Rodrigues, member of the Parents-Teachers Association welcomed the guests, teachers and students. Mr. Henry Fernandes offered floral tribute to the portrait of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the former President of India and a great educationist on whose birthday the Teachers Day is being celebrated.

 
Vijay, student of Second Year PU Commerce and Ashvita, 9th standard students presented their views on the occasion of the Teachers Day. Students of high school and PU College presented group songs pertaining to the Teachers Day in Kannada and English respectively. Teacher Harold D’Souza presented a Hindi song from the film ‘Border’. Fr. Arun read out a poem composed by him in Kannda. Fr. Paul Sequeira along with some teachers also presented a song ‘Guru Devo Bhava’ highlighting the qualities of a teacher.



B. Sadananda rao, the chief guest of the function representing B. Ravindranath Rao who had sponsored the Teachers Day function in the name of his mother-Late Belle Padmavati Vittal Rao, who herself was a great teacher, presented mementos to all the teaching and non-teaching members of the institution. Speaking at this occasion, B. Sadananda Rao through the examples for the Puranas and Mahabharatha explained the role of the teachers in modern times.


Following the distribution of prizes to the winners of the fun games organized by the students for the members of the teaching, Dr. Eugene D’Souza in his message on the occasion of the Teachers Day said that he was fortunate to share the stage with Sadananda Master who was one of his ideal teachers along with Benny Master while he was studying in the higher primary school. He also remembered his teachers in college in Mumbai, especially Prof. V. Mahadevan who ignited in him the love for the subject of History and late Dr. A. Cherian who was his guide for Ph.D. degree.



On this occasion, a letter of appreciation from Most. Rev. Dr. Aloysius D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore and the President of the Catholic Board of Education for successfully conducting the ‘Rashtra Nirmana Abhiyana 2009-2010’ programme by the institution was handed over by Mr. Devdas Hebbar to Principal-Fr. Paul Sequeira. Similarly, Mrs. Shilpa Nayak, President of the Parents-Teachers Association and mother of Kum. Poorna Nayak handed over to her the certificate and honour that she was awarded as one of the 11 highest scoring students of the SSLC (20101) by the Catholic Board of Education on 2nd September 2010 that was collected by Principal Paul Sequeira.

 
The PU Girls Volleyball team that won second place in the Udupi Taluk South Zone tournament held at Palimaru on Friday, 3rd September 2010 were honoured by Principal Paul Sequeira along with Shamala who was adjudged as the Best All Rounder. Three students from the PU College-Shamala, Pooja and Ashvita have been selected in the Udupi Taluk Team to participate in the Udupi District level competition later. Though the boys Volleyball team could not make it to the top ranking, one of the students, Abhishek has been selected for the Udupi Taluk Volleyball Team.
 

At the end, in her presidential address, Mrs. Shilpa Nayak pointed out certain good qualities of some of the teachers of the institution from her own observation when she had come to the college for some work . She pointed out to the students that their future is in the good hands of the teachers of St. Lawrence Composite PU College.
 

Fr. Paul Sequeira presented mementos to the chief guests and flowers to the student leaders representing the students and Mrs. Shilpa Nayak, President of the Parents-Teachers Association for successfully conducting the Teachers day Programmes.

 
Dikshit of 10th standard proposed the vote of thanks and the entire programme was anchored by Santosh Rodrigues of First PU Arts
