Modern education gives information, not knowledge - Dr. B. M. Hegde

Mangalore, Nov 2, 2011:  Delivering the inaugural address after inaugurating an international conference titled “Translation Research: Nurses Making a Difference” at Fr. Muller College of Nursing on Nov 2 Wednesday, Padma Bhushan Dr. B. M. Hegde said that modern education is just getting information, and not wisdom and knowledge.

Voicing his opinion that the term “healthcare” is just a misnomer, he said that the term “disease care” would be more apt since modern medicine focuses not on health, but on the curing of diseases. Since nurses spend more time with patients than doctors, they have a larger role to play in “disease care,” he added.

Condemning the poor quality of research articles in medical journals, he warned the audience against these research articles and informed that quality research should refute dogma and find out undiscovered concepts that can benefit humanity.

Dr. K. Reddamma, the nodal officer of NIMHANS, said on the occasion that nurses can make a lot of difference in the lives of their patients, owing to which they should be more research oriented.

The dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Anice George, the dean of Manipal College of Nursing; Prof. Favrod Jerome from the University of Applied Sciences in Western Switzerland; and Fr. Patrick Rodrigues, the director of FMCI.

The 2-day conference will deal with various issues related to translational research. A number of experts will present papers during these two days.
