The Udupi district administration had on June 25, 2015, issued a Demand Notice for Rs. 1,123 crore to Manipal University, for what it said, was violation of land rules and using 109 acres of land for purposes other than for which it was granted.

The 109 acres of land included the 12.95 acre which housed its International Hostel Block.

Dr. Vishal told sources that the State government had given its post-facto approval to Manipal University for change of land use with regard to the 12.95 acre about three months back.

“But the issue of the remaining 96.05 acres of land is in the High Court,” he said.

Educational purpose

With regard to the 12.95 acres of land, the State government in its order had said that the university had used the land for “overall educational purpose,” he said.

Reaction

Meanwhile, G.K. Prabhu, Registrar of Manipal University, said that the university had moved High Court on the remaining 96.05 acres of land. “We appealed to the High Court on this matter. The High Court has given a Stay Order saying that status quo should be maintained on it,” he said.
