Minister Khader strongly denies plans to ban on chewing tobacco

Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2014:  Strongly denying rumors that the Karnataka government plans to ban tobacco products as recommended by the Health Department, Health and Family Welfare Minister U T  Khader said his department was considering the many health hazards posed by consuming tobacco products and the effectiveness of the ban on ghutkas.  He has categorically stated no proposal exists  as of now before the State government to ban chewing tobacco and other tobacco products.

Khader said the department received reports from NGOs on the hazards about persons ill by consumption of tobacco products, lives had been ruined,  people were spending on treating advanced illness due to tobacco consumption in one form or another. The health department was looking at right action that need be taken for a healthy society.

Salary of doctors :  Minister  Khader went on to inform that the Finance Department was yet to approve a salary hike proposed by his department for MBBS and postgraduate doctors. He said following mass resignation of doctors, his department proposed to raise the salary of MBBS doctors from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 and  of PGs from Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1.1 lakh. The Finance Department was studying the pay structure of doctors in other parts of the country. Several issues of different categories of doctors was being looked into and will resolve soon.
