Mangalore, Aug 17: Revu Nayaka Belamagi, the minister for animal husbandry, said that the total profit of Rs. 443 crore obtained by raising milk prices to Rs. 2 has been distributed among 6.41 lakh people to encourage farming. He was addressing reporters at a press conference held at Ocean Pearl on Aug 17, Tuesday.

The minister also said that the department has implemented the Amrutha Scheme in order to help widows and devadasis and has provided financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 each to 27,353 beneficiaries from 2007 – 10, which adds up to Rs. 29.07 crore, so that they can purchase buffalos and cows. He said that the financial assistance will be further raised to Rs. 35,000.


Pointing out the lack of veterinary doctors in the state, he said the students who opt for veterinary studies in colleges are few. Urging students to opt for veterinary studies, he said that Hassan College has 76 students and that Shimoga has 306 students.


While the total percentage of animals has increased, the number of cows and buffaloes have drastically decreased, said the minister adding that there are only 1,090,47 local cows at present. The implementation of the anti cow slaughter bill will surely benefit the state owing to the usefulness of cow dung and urine, he said.


The state is willing to allocate 83 acres of land at Koila farm to KMF so that it can grow grass for cows, he informed. Koila farm comprises laterite stone and a couple of bore wells and KMF will have to identify land suitable for growing grass, said the minister. 


Dr. K. V. Halagappa, the deputy director of animal husbandry; Dr. Venkatesh, the deputy director of Koila Farm; Dr. Shankar, the in-charge of Fisheries College; Dr. Jayaprakash; and Dr. Satyanarayana of KMF were also present during the press conference.
