Udupi, March 29, 2016: Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje has been elected as the new President of Udupi CMC while Sandhya Tilakraj was elected the Vice President on March 29, Tuesday. Both are from the Congress.
If the President’s post was reserved for a general category lady candidate, the Vice President’s post was meant for an SC/ST lady candidate.
Meenakshi, a three time councillor represents Kodavoor ward while the new Vice President Sandhya represents Vadabhandeshwara ward. As the BJP had fielded no candidate despite having four eligible councillors, Meenakshi was elected. As far as Vice President’s post was concerned Sandhya was the only eligible candidate.
The candidates for top posts were earlier chosen at a meeting of the party held under the leadership of MLA Pramod Kumar.
An official announcement regarding the election of new CMC President and Vice President are likely to be made soon.
The 35 member House has 22 Congress and 13 BJP councillors.
