Mangaluru, Oct 29, 2017: With pressure escalated on Congress to sack Mangaluru mayor Kavitha Sanil after she allegedly assaulted a woman in her apartment, Dakshina Kannada(DK) district Congress president K Harish Kumar on Oct 28, Saturday said he had sought an explanation from Kavitha after he learnt about the incident through the media. However, he said Kavitha will continue in her post.
Speaking to media, Kumar said Kavitha has already presented evidence to prove she is faultless. The party is convinced that Kavitha is not guilty hence, there is no question of seeking her resignation, he added while blaming BJP of trying to frame her in the case.
Meanwhile, the BJP Mahila Morcha has demanded that the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) take initiatives to book mayor under the Juvenile Justice Act. It has also sought that the case be investigated by the DCP or senior-level police officers.
A woman from Bagalkot, the wife of a watchman of the apartment where Kavitha resides, had complained that Kavitha had assaulted her and pulled away her child. Kamala, who is residing with her husband and three children in the basement of the apartment, had filed a complaint at the Mangaluru women police station.
In a video that has been circulating on social media, Kamala is seen complaining about the mayor.
Kamala, accompanied with BJP leader Roopa D Bangera, filed a complaint on Oct 27, Friday. Meanwhile, Congress corporators held a meet and extended their moral support to the mayor.
