Matsyagandha Express: Fluke accident near Karwar kills one, injures 20

Mangalore, Nov 8: Mangalore, Nov 8: Mangalore-Mumbai Matsyagandha Express met with a fluke accident on Monday, 7.30 PM. Over 20 passengers were injured in the accident occurred near Ankola, close to Karwar station. One passenger succumbed to injuries. The deceased is V T Shaina (33), native of Tallichery , Kerala.  Two passengers are said to be serious.





The train was on its way from Mangalore to Kurla, Mumbai. The train was passing through steep cutting of hill area when heavy boulders fell on the train due to landslide. Stones fell on boggy No S-5 and S-6, penetrated the roof. The spot is very close to Thodur station.

"Two coaches of the train were affected and will be replaced at Karwar," said Baban Ghatge, public relations manager, Konkan railway corporation (KRC).

Landslides are not uncommon on the Konkan Railway tracks during the monsoon, when rocky gravel and boulders slip onto the tracks causing accidents.

Some of the injured were identified as Shrichanda, Tejas Bhat, Suvarna Bhat, Ravi Bhat, Prashant R, Vijayanta Shetty, Sudarshan shetty, Sudesh, Ajesh, Niranjan, Mahesh, George Sequiera, Sudarshan, Gracey, Prajesh, Manoj, Suneetkumar, Naveenkumar, Sanjana, Prema Kotian and Sunilkumar. They are admitted in Sea Bird Patanjali Hospital, Karwar.

 

The Public Releation Officer of Southern Railway’s Palakkad division has informed after the accident of Mangalore-Mumbai Matsyagandha Express  near Ankola that the helplines have been opened for the convenience of the people, relating to the above mishap.
