The protestors alleged that the sand smuggling activity has resulted in an artificial scarcity of sand and has also hit hard the construction industry. They also pointed out that a number of trucks were  spotted moving towards Kerala via Konaje and Manjanady and accused the authorities of ignoring the illegal activity.

The speeding sand trucks have also been responsible for a number of accidents, the  protestors alleged.

Several locals including Taluk Panchayat members were part of the protest. The sand trucks intercepted by locals  were  taken into custody by Konaje police.
